Masterplan – no wholesale demolition

Council members announced some significant changes to the Masterplan at a Burngreave Area Panel meeting on Sunday 17th April at Firvale School. It was a well-attended and at times fiery meeting with upwards of 200 people coming in over the course of the afternoon.

Work has started on a sanctuary for wildlife at Parkwood Springs on a neglected area of land at the side of Shirecliffe Road. The hawthorn hedge is being laid in the traditional way by expert hedger Jasper Pratchek, using a technique which will allow the hedge to regrow and thrive.

3,000 oppose landfill developments

A petition signed by nearly 3,000 local people opposing the proposed developments at Parkwood landfill site was presented to a meeting of Sheffield City Council on 6th July. The petitioners object to planning applications for a leachate treatment plant, an electricity generator which would burn gases produced by the decay of waste, and to the proposal to expand the dumping of active waste.

Cleaner Arches

The stone facing of the landmark Wicker arches has recently had a clean-up, thanks to Network Raid and Sheffield City Council. The operation follows on from recent decorative lighting in the pedestrian arches and illumination above the main span. The Green City Action DIG team have just completed a project to replace the rotten benches on Carwood Green. The public spaces on the Carwood estate are run down and poorly maintained. A new start for Burngreave’s Community Forum

The Burngreave Community Action Forum was established in 1997, to be the voice of influence for the community and communities in Burngreave. The Forum has had a difficult time in recent years. Its managing organisation, Burngreave Community Action Trust, collapsed in 2006 with the loss of it’s funding and the staff team. Now with their new Development Manager, Steve Gayle, and administrator Daniel Stanley there is a possibility of new life for our community forum.

Thieves strike local landmark

Winnie Bentley has lived at the Toll Bar House at the top of Burngreave Road for 32 years. Built in 1836, the house is a Grade II listed building. As with many other old buildings, there was lead on the roof, but in July 2007, for the first time in the house’s history, this lead was stolen.

Youth housing support fails

On the night Jonathan Matondo was killed, it wasn’t the only shooting incident. Earlier that day, residents of Melrose Road heard shots being fired into the young people’s flats belonging to Arches Housing Association and managed by Stonham. Woodside land offered cheap

The council’s plan to sell off housing land at Woodside for redevelopment was dealt a set back recently. The council has put out its offer to a panel of five different developers, but council workers told members of the Burngreave New Housing Group in September that only one developer had decided to bid. Even this was less than the minimum the council demanded.

Race Equality Council displaced by flooding

Race Equality Council, normally based in the SYAC building damaged by flooding on the Wicker, have found a temporary base at the New Deal for Communities office.

Evacuation on Bolsover Road

Rain fell continuously on 15th June, overwhelming the drains and flooding cellars. As the electricity was switched off, over 100 residents were evacuated from water contaminated with sewage. For those who couldn’t get to family or friends, there was Fir Vale School and later Longley Day Centre for an overnight stay. The Pakistan Advice Centre (PAC) was amongst support services on hand to help.

Ground rent sales

Concerns about the sale of land under Cookswood Road homes sparked a public meeting in June, organised by residents and the Messenger. It was attended by over 40 people from Cookswood Road, Shirecliffe Lane and Rutland Road.

Scouts brighten up Ellesmere

Ellesmere residents were delighted to see colourful beds of flowers in the shape of a yellow ‘fleur de lys’ and a blue and white number 100 appear on Carwood Road. 76th Sheffield Scouts planted the flower beds to celebrate 100 years of Scouting.

Wicker under water

On 25th June 2007 the River Don engulfed Nursery Street pouring down into the Wicker and all surrounding streets.

  • Businesses left reeling – Businesses around the Wicker are still cleaning up.

  • Wicker Pharmacy stays open – Staff managed to keep the business going.

  • SYAC Nursery – Within 15 minutes staff were wading through knee-high water.

  • Station Foyer – Residents were ecacuated to a hostel.

  • SADACCA: The Day Care Centre lost everything.
