The Friends of Burngreave Cemetery and Chapel have a new project – ‘Digging Deep under the Cemetery.’

It is one of the first groups in the UK to receive an ‘All Our Stories’ grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund. The £5,300 grant will enable local people to learn skills to research the history of the mines beneath the land the cemetery now occupies.

The course will take place on Fridays 10.00am – 12 noon. 1st February, 1st March, 12th April, 3rd May, 7th June and 5th July covering:

  • local history training sessions in the Burngreave Vestry Hall, access to local history archives and other records, writing workshops to produce material for the Burngreave Messenger, a book and a drama production.

  • a photographic exhibition and artworks within the cemetery.

  • archaeological surveys of the various mineshafts seen on early 19th century maps.

Cemetery Chapel activities

The ‘Friends of Burngreave Chapel & Cemetery’ group was set up “to make the cemetery and chapel buildings accessible to everybody and to educate and enlighten visitors into not only its history, but its wildlife, trees and plants, which overlap and interact.”

The group of unpaid volunteers transcribe grave records onto computer, help visitors find graves and organise regular fun activities throughout the year.

Sunday craft sessions will take place (2 – 4pm) until 2nd June, including:

  • Lantern-making for Sharrow Lantern Carnival – this year’s theme is ‘Roots’

  • Decor-making for Peace In The Park festival

  • More experimental shadow puppets and projections using our big screen!

  • Pottery with Nick (using potters wheel)
