After a lot of negotiations and frustrations Burngreave now has its own recycling point for glass – three recycling bring banks in Gower Street car park. There is also a paper bin for those who don’t have blue bins. If these facilities are well used and undamaged the site will hopefully be expanded to collect other recyclables.
Reducing, reusing and recycling our waste decreases pollution, landfill and the demand on limited raw resources. It’s easy to do your bit for the environment once you get into the habit. Simply rinse jars and bottles, and pop them into the recycling bring banks. It’s a good idea to be a regular recycler and not let it build up at home as it’ll become an inconvenience and you’ll be less likely to do it.
There are plenty of other things you can do to minimise the waste you create – for more information log onto www.recyclingmatters.org.uk/. Use your blue bin for paper and card only and if you have space you could compost all your kitchen and garden waste. Compost bins are currently available for £3 for composting at home.

Garden waste collected
Onyx can collect your garden waste using their green waste sacks. You can buy them at Burngreave Library, the Town Hall and Howden House – they are three for £1.50 and at the moment you get another three free! Once they’re full, contact the Council helpline on 273 4567 and select the ‘Onyx’ option. The sacks can be filled with grass and hedge cuttings, flowers and leaves (no kitchen waste). There must be a minimum of three sacks for collection. The Area Panel are proposing to purchase some of these bags and give them away to elderly people in the area.
