Flood warning for the River Don

High water levels at the River Don on Friday 6th July, brought back memories of the destructive floods five years ago.

Many residents came to see the spectacle from Lady's Bridge, as the river raged through the city and on to Meadowhall and Rotherham.

The Environment Agency raised the Flood Alert to a Flood Warning, which remained in place on Saturday for Meadowhall and Templeborough. The emergency services remained on alert through Friday night with real fears that the Don would burst its banks in these places.

Nearer to home, the Environment Agency had stationed themselves on Corporation Street bridge by the Riverside Pub on Friday night to check the flow of the river and make sure there were no blockages. By 8pm they were reassuring local residents and passers by that the river was already beginning to drop.

The river level is monitored by the Environment agency not far away at Tinsley

The unfinished Pocket Park on Nursery Street was struggling to hold back the waters. The plan is to create a new flood defence here, but with the work only part finished the river was taking its toll on the soft banking that had been exposed. It was obvious that the flood defence under construction is much needed in order to protect the Wicker from the devastating flooding it suffered in June 2007.
