Traffic chaos as new road opens

Story: Lisa Harrison

On Monday 19th November 2007, the new Inner Relief Road opened, crossing The Wicker at the bottom of Spital Hill, and on the same day the Better Buses scheme in Burngreave was launched. The Messenger has learned of a catalogue of problems relating to this issue.

Buses do not always get priority at the new traffic lights at the end of the bus lane on Burngreave Road.

None of the new pedestrian crossings beep, making it especially difficult for blind and partially-sighted people to know when to cross.

The new information displays work some of the time, but problems have been reported during busy times, with displays seemingly never changing. Additionally, journey times on buses returning from the city centre have been greatly increased, sometimes taking an hour to get to Firshill. At the same time, the new road remains largely deserted.

If you would like to share your experiences of the current chaos, or have any other comments about the new road, please e-mail the Messenger at messenger@burngreave.net – we’d love to hear from you.

We've managed to get hold of a map showing the way around the changed road system – check the map of the new inner relief road to see how this affects the area.
