The first ever presentation evening celebrated by young people’s project Streetworx had a big impact on the 31st October at the Vestry Hall, attracting residents of a wide ethnic background and the majority of the crowd were young people.
The Dancing Divaz took the stage beginning with their well-performed, wellpracticed dancing. The Divaz constituted a wide age range, from 10 to 18. Tanya Brown and Katie Fiddler who coach the Divaz told us their aim is to work with people of different ages in theatre and dance.
Host for the evening Zain Abdullah, Streetworx’s manager, introduced special guest Mr Mohammed Iqbal, Chair of Burngreave New Deal, who presented the certificates. He said the awards show achievements both as a community and personal gain. He noted that,
“Communication between young and old is hard at times. But the older generation does care and has high aspirations and hopes for young people.”
He then presented certificates to the Divaz, followed by Beauty is Skin Deep which is about how girls should keep their skin healthy. People from a boxing course were also rewarded. Rachel took the stage and showed her potential to us all as she sang so confidently. John Clark from BNDfC was the next guest issuing certificates. He noted how important youths are in any community. One of the ways teenagers could help to make the community better is by contributing towards the Youth Council in Burngreave.
They are trying to make the right choices available; what people should do is ‘Spread the word about the Youth Council’.
