Work has started on a sanctuary for wildlife at Parkwood Springs on a neglected area of land at the side of Shirecliffe Road.
The hawthorn hedge is being laid in the traditional way by expert hedger Jasper Pratchek, using a technique which will allow the hedge to regrow and thrive.
Such hedgerows provide a rich source of food for birds and small mammals. But when hedges become very overgrown they suppress most other plant life. Laying such hedges permits dormant seeds to germinate.
The site is being developed following an initiative by Jean Armstrong, Chair of Parkwood Landfill Action Group. Jean told the Messenger, “The land has been derelict for so long. We just want to make it into a place people can enjoy and be proud of.”
Landfill tax money has been secured to pay for the work, which is being managed by Sheffield Wildlife Trust. The works include footpaths, seating and landscaping.
