On 4th January 2006 we received reports of a large police presence in the Spital Hill area. At around 11.30am the following day we witnessed five uniformed police units station themselves on Brunswick and Burngreave Roads, Spital and Earsham Streets, Bressingham Road North and Spital Hill.

Masterplan – no wholesale demolition

Council members announced some significant changes to the Masterplan at a Burngreave Area Panel meeting on Sunday 17th April at Firvale School. It was a well-attended and at times fiery meeting with upwards of 200 people coming in over the course of the afternoon.

Bennetts Tyres, which has operated from premises on Kilton Hill for twenty years, has had a reprieve from planned demolition under the Masterplan. Out of the blue a letter arrived from the Council, which told the Bennett brothers that their business was safe – for now.

Caborn’s Corner – a bit of Sheffield's history under threat?

Whilst studying recent plans for the new Tesco supermarket at the top of Spital Hill, somebody pointed out to me that the ‘attractive urban landscape with potential public plaza’ marked at the front of the drawing appeared to obliterate a bit of Sheffield’s political history: Caborn’s Corner. It’s a small triangle of land located at the junction of Spital Hill and Carlisle Street, just below the East House and opposite The Kashmir restaurant.

Gower update

The Gower – the pub in the centre of Burngreave – remains open. In November’s issue, we reported on new conditions the police wanted to see in place to address their concerns. Sheffield City Council’s licensing board met on January 9th to review the licence and decided the pub can still open as long as certain conditions were met.
