Target Cactus Club

The Cactus Club nightclub, on Earsham Street, opened in February 2005, with hopes of being a community venue and successful club. However, since opening, the management have complained about the high number of visits they receive from the police, and the large numbers in which they arrive.

Thieves strike local landmark

Winnie Bentley has lived at the Toll Bar House at the top of Burngreave Road for 32 years. Built in 1836, the house is a Grade II listed building. As with many other old buildings, there was lead on the roof, but in July 2007, for the first time in the house’s history, this lead was stolen.

Earlier that day, residents of Melrose Road heard shots being fired into the young people’s flats belonging to Arches Housing Association and managed by Stonham. Since then, all but one of the residents have been moved out, and the flats boarded up.

Gower update

The Gower – the pub in the centre of Burngreave – remains open. In November’s issue, we reported on new conditions the police wanted to see in place to address their concerns. Sheffield City Council’s licensing board met on January 9th to review the licence and decided the pub can still open as long as certain conditions were met.

Response from Sergeant Simon Leake of the New Deal Police Team, to the complaint about the attitude of officers during the recent operation Gulliver and the use of stop and search.

Sensitive Community Policing?

Burngreave residents have shown their support for police operation Gulliver, a forty-day operation, using Section 60 powers to stop and search anyone police suspected of carrying drugs, knives and guns. The operation has made 51 arrests, recovering stolen vehicles, drugs, large amounts of cash and a firearm. However, some questions have been raised about how the operation has, on occasion, been pursued.

Residents call for action on Firshill Road

Firshill Road residents expressed their anger at the drug dealing on their road, and their frustration that police action had had little effect in stopping it, at a meeting with police and Councillors in November.

Support for parents of prisoners

In August 2005, the black volunteer-led ‘Parents Of Prisoners Support Group’ was started in the kitchen of one concerned woman in response to widespread concern that parents and relatives of those in prison had nowhere to go and nobody to talk to about their traumatic situation.

Gower under pressure

South Yorkshire Police contacted the Messenger claiming they have reliable intelligence of Class A drug dealing and firearms in and around the Gower Arms, Earsham Street.
