Police appeal for information about muggings

Police are appealing for information after two men were robbed in a Sheffield cemetery in two separate incidents over four days.

The first incident happened at around 2.30pm on Tuesday 22 September when a man was assaulted and had his wallet stolen in Burngreave Cemetery.

It was reported that the man was approached by three unknown men who knocked him to the floor before taking his wallet.

Four days later, on Saturday 26 September, it was reported that a 48-year-old man was also assaulted by a group of three young men in the same location.

At around 12.50pm, as the man walked through the cemetery, he was kicked by one of the men which caused him to drop his rucksack. As the victim tried to leave the scene with his bag, he was pushed to the ground and assaulted by all three suspects.

The offenders stole his wallet and phone before running away toward the Melrose Road entrance.

The man was taken to hospital where he was treated for minor injuries.

The first offender is described as around 19-years-old, wearing a light blue hooded top. The second is described as around 14-years-old, wearing a grey hooded top and the third was wearing a black hooded top.

Officers are currently reviewing CCTV footage of the area and enquiries are ongoing.

PC Lucy Marriott, leading the investigation, said:

We are treating the incidents as linked and are following a number of lines of enquiry.

We would like to reassure members of the public that we have increased patrols in the area and are working hard to apprehend these offenders.

I would appeal for anyone with information or who was in the area at the time of either assault to get in touch, in particular a man who we believe was walking his dog in the cemetery on September 26.

Please contact 101 quoting incident number 792 of September 22 2015 or 582 of September 26 2015.”
