Story: New Roots volunteers

Photos: Davey Smith

New Roots Cafe has extended its opening hours from 11.30 – 5pm, ideal for after school. We are offering milk shakes and smoothies throughout half term.

New Roots is now run entirely by volunteers. We are building on the last 10 years’ success and wish to develop local ownership of the project and its high ethical aspirations.

The previous co-ordinator, Caroline Norman, is a hard act to follow so New Roots appreciates her continuing as a volunteer for the food project. We hope that people get involved beyond the running of the cafe as this could enable additional events and services being available. Free training in food hygiene certification is offered.

However, the cafe is the driving force. We may explore breakfasts, sandwiches, an evening restaurant even: it mostly depends on you. Everything is run on voluntary power… but many hands make light work. We believe New Roots can emerge. Times are going to get hard: we need to work together for our community.

Visit us, talk to us or simply look around. If you are unable to call in during opening hours, leave a message on 0114 270 0972.
