We’ve seen the light!

Story: Saleema Imam

At last electricity has returned to the chapels in Burngreave Cemetery. Thanks to those in City Council who enabled the electricity to be connected. After two winters in the cold and dark the Friends group can now give more help to visitors looking for graves of their relatives.

In recent years Friends of Burngreave Cemetery and Chapels have been transcribing burial records and other documents and inputting them to computer. These can now be viewed in the left hand chapel any Sunday between 11am and 3pm until October when we revert to 12 noon to 2pm..A microfiche reader also enables visitors to view transcriptions of Headstones, kindly provided by Sheffield and District Family History Society.

The City Council are still working on clearing unwanted trees and tidying graves, and with banks of daffodils in flower and the trees beginning to show their leaves and blossom, the cemetery is a beautiful place to be on a sunny Sunday.

An open weekend will take place on Saturday and Sunday July 17th and 18th with displays and information about graves in the cemetery, children’s activities and a return of the annual well dressing if enough volunteers can be found. Look out for more information nearer the day. Guided summer walks around the cemetery are being discussed and another ‘Apple Day’ planned for the third week in October as part of One World Week.

Please contact Christine on 0114 281 6950 for help with finding a family grave or information about Friends of Burngreave Cemetery and Chapel.
