The Inner Relief Road

Dear Messenger Thanks for your article in the June issue about the Inner Relief Road. I liked the clear simple plan showing the main features (‘HUGE dual carriageway’, ‘ANOTHER HUGE dual carriageway’).

But surely you are wrong to think that the intention is to cut Burngreave off from the rest of Sheffield. Actually the Council aims to: “Re-integrate Victoria Quays, the Law Courts, Exchange Riverside and the Wicker areas with the City Centre”, according to the website. Nothing to do with keeping us out at all, although I suppose some local businesses might feel that closing the central section of the Wicker to cars isn’t the best sort of integration from their point of view. It’s really just about fair treatment for all those poor excluded inner-city yuppies and District Judges.
