Job Purpose:

Under the supervision of the Healthy Living Centre Manager, the cafeteria coordinator is responsible for the operation of the Fir Vale Healthy Living Centre (HLC) Café lounge. To co-ordinate, manage and develop a vibrant, welcoming and inclusive meeting place for the local community, service users and staff to enjoy good quality, healthy and affordable refreshments, snacks and meals. To develop and deliver other café based services in response to community need, including healthy cookery courses, training opportunities, social and cultural food events and other projects.

Key Tasks:

  1. To manage the café ensuring minimum opening hours of 8.30am – 3.30pm Monday to Friday.

  2. To recruit, train and supervise café assistants, trainees and others in the use of all equipment, health and safety standards and practices, food preparation and cooking, customer care, till operation.

  3. To plan menus and prices, providing a variety of options for healthy eating and nutritious snacks along side line manager.

  4. To purchase supplies for the café.

  5. To lead in preparing and cooking activities in the café, prioritising requirements and delegating tasks to café assistants, volunteers, trainees and others.

  6. To be responsible for Health and Safety in the café.

  7. To manage income and expenditure in the café, working with the Line Manager and Finance Manager.

  8. To assist with promotion & marketing of activities to encourage the take up of services.

  9. To keep the Cafe area neat, clean and stocked in compliance with health and safety standards.

  10. Open and close the Café and perform related duties as assigned.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

ESSENTIAL:

Skills, Knowledge and Experience:

Interest in the wider food agenda to include some or all of: healthy cookery, reducing food waste, improving cookery skills, cultural foods and food poverty.

Knowledge and understanding of nutrition and health.

Skills in food preparation and cookery Knowledge and understanding of relevant health and safety and food hygiene requirements.

Experience of working to a budget.

Excellent communication skills. Establish and maintain effective relationships with other employees, managers and the general public.

Strong organisational skills.

Ability to work with minimum supervision with the ability to plan and prioritise own and others work.

Food hygiene certificate (or willingness to train).

Circumstances and Commitment:

Willingness to work evenings and weekends on occasion.

DESIRABLE:

Experience of food preparation and catering within a commercial kitchen or café Experience of supervising volunteers.

Experience of delivering food skills training and/or community food activities and sessions.

Experience of working or volunteering within a deprived community.

Full driving licence and access to a car.

First Aid certificate.

Relevant qualifications e.g. catering, nutrition, health or training qualifications eg PTTLS.
