Burngreave’s study support groups came together on 29th June to celebrate the achievements of young people.
Hundreds of young people and their parents attended from Somali Education Breakthrough, Reach High 2, IT Community School Subject Support and Burngreave After School Study Support Project. The event was in collaboration with the Children’s University who awarded each young person a certificate recognising all the extra hours of study they have put in between September and March.
Special guests Sonia Sharp and Jackie Drayton, from the Council, and Penny Rea, from the Children’s University, praised everyone for their efforts and their parents for supporting their children. The Olympic bobsleigh champion Nicola Minichiello, also gave an inspiring speech about the extra hours and dedication needed to win an Olympic medal.
Young people entertained the crowd throughout the evening. Reach High 2 performed a drama about Martin Luther King and his struggle against segregation and racism. Aisha and Sundas gave speeches about the importance of study support. Ayan Abdi impressed everyone with her poetry. And young men from the Yemeni dancers gave the evening a real feeling of celebration.
