Full summer for young people…

The summer activities listed in this edition are an impressive collation of events in Burngreave, pulled together by the Messenger. See Summer Activities 2011.

But there are already fewer than last year and we worry about what resources will remain after the summer, when young people move into a new year of school, college or University … if they can.

…but cuts are about to bite

Cuts to the now-disbanded Streetworx, Sheffield Futures, careers services and educational maintenance allowance (EMA) and increases in fees for University courses and ESOL will all mean fewer options for young people in September.

Further cuts in young people’s services are expected after the summer. We don’t know what next year’s summer activity programme will look like. It is up to all relevant agencies to plan for replacements for what is being lost.
