The Cactus Club hosted three nights of urban music, rap and break dancing in August 2005. The events were organised by Urban Music, who started out of a desire for all types of street music to have a positive influence on youngsters.
There are quite a few courses young people can attend, but no facility for them to expand their practice. Who better to find a possible solution than a youngster? Bhavesh Patel, 17-year-old promoter for Urban Music, has arranged the three events – the general feedback was simply ‘more, more, more’!
Edward Oggleston, manager of Urban Music, was keen to emphasise that he and Bhavesh are equal directors. He said: “Bhavesh has the potential to be a community leader within Burngreave”.
Urban Music is presently at foundation stage but the ultimate goal is to lift the profile of Burngreave as it has a lot going for it. They want to allow young people to develop their skills within the music industry. Its priority is to put on regular events so people can come out and enjoy themselves. When asked what is the future for Urban Music the reply was, “Change children’s role models in order to clean up Burngreave”.
The event was supported by Red Tape Studios, Burngreave Community Action Trust and Burngreave New Deal for Communities.
