El-Nisah women’s group

Over 80 women attended El- Nisah women’s group Health Day in June 2005.

The event was to raise the health awareness of those who have language difficulties; to give them a chance to discuss any kind of issues in confidence, with an interpreter if needed. The women enjoyed the stalls and workshops, which were available from the Children’s Information Centre, the NHS, who provided blood pressure tests and New Deal health support workers who provided information on cervical screening. There were speakers on the day providing Arabic language support, helping women understand different aspects of health-related issues.

Cultural celebration

On 4th June 2005 a performance was brought together by the El-Nisah women’s group, Burngreave After School Study Support Project and the Yemeni Community Association at the Library Theatre.

The performance took the audience on a journey through the real-life experiences a young girl adapting to the move from Yemen to the UK with her mother and sister, to join their father who had been working in the Sheffield steel industry for over 17 years.

The people who took part in the event were all females ranging from the age of 10–30 years old. Everyone had been rehearsing very hard for months before and enjoyed taking part. The only disappointment was the poor attendance by agencies. Many felt insulted by this and some remarked they would not attend events organised by those agencies who were invited.
