Story & Photos: Usha Blackham

Over the years Whiteways Primary School has been trying our best to reach out to parents, carers and people in the community starting from family learning to families getting involved in school activities.

We have reading mornings which give parents a chance to come and read with their children. We also have books in many languages so children have the chance to boost their first language. Thanks to Sue Aldred our EAL cocoordinator and her team for making this work and to parents for attending.

We run charity fund raising events each year. For Comic Relief in 2007 we raised £275.83, 2009 £700.18,in 2010 £583.68 and on Friday 18th March this year – £868.88. Money was also raised for Children in Need.

We are so pleased to have such a good parental involvement in our events and children’s wellbeing. Our winter mela 2011 was a fantastic event lots and lots about Wild Life; African drumming packed the hall with a teachers and pupils multicultural fashion show and children performing Indian Arabic and Slovakian dance. Each Year had theirown enterprise projects. It was really good to see children showing their own products and parents and other visitors taking part.
