Plans to build 19 affordable homes on Ellesmere Road have got the go ahead after the Council managed to find an alternative developer to match the £1.6 million of Government funding granted to the scheme.
The homes, originally planned for local authority ownership, were awarded planning permission at the end of August 2010 and would have been among the first Council Houses to go up in Sheffield for over 20 years. However, recent cutbacks meant the Council's Neighbourhoods department had to search for a private developer with capital to invest in the project. Local social housing provider, Arches Housing was able to put up the cash and, alongside the Government grant, they will now develop the scheme.
Manchester architects, Stephenson Bell will provide the plans for two 5-bed, seven 4-bed, four 3-bed and six 2-bed homes to be built on cleared land on Ellesmere Road between Clun Street and Buckenham Street.
The dwellings have been designed to achieve the Code for Sustainable Homes level 5 and should provide highly efficient, healthy and affordable homes for tenants to rent.
Building work is planned to start before the end of March 2011.
