A Golden 50 years

Story:Clare & Alan Burnell

We were some of the lucky ones invited to celebrate John and Margaret Mellor’s golden wedding anniversary. John had arranged (supposedly secretly) a musical celebration as a surprise for Margaret.

We were treated to a very entertaining two hours of beautiful and very varied music performed by the Grenoside Singers, with guest soloists Elizabeth Birkby (soprano) and Dianne Butt (cello). We also had a lovely rendition of ‘Danny Boy’ by their ten year old granddaughter on the violin – and all of this happening just down the road at St Peter’s church!

Throughout the evening John held the performances together with excellent piano and organ accompaniment. We’re ashamed to admit that, in spite of knowing John for over 15 years, we didn’t even know he could play the piano!

We had such a lovely time that we were inspired to search out some more classical music. Thanks again for the invitation John and Margaret and may you have many more of the same.
