Poetry... by Sylvia Reaney

Listening

We hear the sounds of ever day,
not listening to what they say,
so listen for the church bells ringing,
early morn when the birds are singing,
the whistling wind, the swaying trees,
bleating sheep, the buzzing bees,
the sound of a horn as a ship passes by,
cows in the meadow, a human sigh,
a laughing child while he's at play,
a rumbling train steaming on its way,
some crowing cocks, a barking hound,
all wonderful things we heard by sound.

Our life

Sometimes we think our life's a bind,
nothing goes right, we don't feel kind,
think to ourselves this is the end,
grumbling at neighbours, mate and friend,
words we utter sometimes quite curt,
never thinking how they might hurt,
if only we could give some thought
think to ourselves, that life is short,
say we're sorry, then begin the day,
looking at life in a different way,
realising we are not perfection,
you and I there is no exception,
think of others in distress,
of ourselves think less and less
we all could be much more forgiving,
then our life would be worthwhile living

Looking

It would be nice to look beyond
our selfish greed,
look further than our own backyard
at others in their hour of need,
look for our compassion, somewhere
deep in our heart,
we only have to search, and give
a little part,
look at all the beauty, around us
we should see
look for all the right doors to
open with a key,
look for another threshold, inside
there is someone there
looking for our kindness, hoping
that we care,
so let us go looking to help our
fellow man,
then maybe he will come a'looking
to help us when he can

The beauty of our world

When you look at the moon, the sun, the sky,
all the things that have wings and fly,
the flowers that grow in beauty mass,
surrounded by the new mown grass,
children at play in the nearby park,
morning mist, the light, the dark,
ships that sail upon the seas,
trees gently swaying in the breeze,
snow that falls in sparkling flakes,
rain from clouds that dance on the lakes,
a coloured rainbow, fields of corn,
into this world we all are born,
for the beauty in these worldly things all around us to see such joy it brings
