Abbeyfield Multicultural Festival brought thousands of people to celebrate in Abbeyfield Park on a hot summer day in July.
The event was opened by the ex-Home Secretary David Blunkett, who congratulated all the festival volunteers for making the event happen, without funding from New Deal and on less money than previous years.
The multicultural event brought residents from Burngreave and outside to share a delightful atmosphere, “The festival is very good. I think it’s good to see lots of people looking very happy,” said one festival-goer.
The event was an amazing sight in the park, which seemed enormous with everyone in it. Many different kinds of people came out to enjoy themselves, to hear many types of music such as reggae, Roma music, break-dancing style, and rapping style. On the main stage, local residents demonstrated their talents in Kung Fu, dance and singing.
There were lots of fascinating foods to try, including barbecue grills, which gave out a delicious smell on the warm air. There was plenty of information, stalls and activities for children to participate in.
“There’s loads to do, loads of entertainment and really nice people. The food’s right nice.”
“I thought it wouldn’t be this big. My girlfriend had found some information on housing – she’s been looking for a flat.”
“There is a nice family atmosphere and lots of stalls. The people are friendly, we’ve enjoyed it.”
“I have been to the reggae area, which sounds good, and it’s good to see the different food and the different cultures gathering together.”
“It’s very good, the weather helps. The people are fantastic and it’s nice to see everyone enjoying themselves.”
