Abbeyfield House needs a new roof
Water has been pouring into the Abbeyfield House during the recent heavy rain, due to a leaking roof which the Council has failed to fix.
Council officers say the roof can no longer be repaired and must be replaced. The issue has been referred to Corporate Property for them to consider it for capital spend. However the money in the capital pot is tiny in comparison to cost of repairs needed to buildings across the city. Abbeyfield House will be up against high profile buildings which need urgent maintenance, including the Central Library.
Abbeyfield House, which has been the Messenger's base for 10 years, is more than 150 years old, but is now in danger of becoming unfit for use. The Council recognise that an empty building will quickly decline into ruin, but action to prevent further damege by the water looks unlikely.
