Messenger Editorial

The story of Naseh Ghafor has distressed many in Burngreave. As fears for his life grew, friends staged a spontaneous road block and his plight took centre stage in our community.

Burngreave is somewhere all have been welcomed and real pride is taken in our diversity. Ever since the booming of the steel mills on Carlisle Street people have come here seeking work, fleeing persecution or seeking refuge. Our many hostels and support organisations are a safety net to people from all over the city and the world. The result is a community where it is never safe to make assumptions and where world events directly affect our neighbours.

Horror has greeted the news that our Government, elected with an ‘ethical foreign policy’, is insisting that such a damaged young man must return to Iraq, but we are relieved that the compassion and support of local people seems to have convinced Naseh it is worth living.

This month’s team:

Farzana Ahmed, Kate Atkinson, Annie Blindell, Clare Burnell, Mark Lankshear, Jamie Marriott, Carl Rose, Rob Smith, Lisa Swift and Paul Taylor.
