The Sheffield Fairness Commission is holding its next public meeting in Burngreave – at 6.15pm at Sorby House on Spital Hill. A pre-meeting discussion will be held from 5pm on Wednesday 9th May.
It will be a public hearing of evidence on poverty, welfare, benefits and the impact of income inequality.
The Fairness Commission has been set up by Sheffield City Council and includes representatives from groups and organisations across the city, working to change Sheffield for the better. Fairness Commissions have been used before in Islington in London and in York. It will hear evidence from groups and individuals around the city, both from written submissions and in open meetings until September. The Commission will recommend things that public bodies, business and charities can do to make Sheffield a fairer place, aiming to reduce the inequalities that exist in the city.
This session is open to the public and will hear evidence around income inequality, welfare, benefits and ideas for change.
Professor Richard Wilkinson, who is co-author of the book “The Spirit Level” and a campaigner on reducing the gap between high paid and low paid, will be speaking at the event. He will lead an open discussion at 5pm, where everyone will have a chance to ask questions. There will also be an opportunity to discuss the presentations after the public session of the Commission closes.
