On 10th October 2007 the Secretary of State for Health announced an unprecedented level of additional investment to fund stepped improvements in access to psychological therapies at the primary care level for more than 900 000 people living in England over the next three years. Sheffield has been chosen as one of the initial pilot sites in Yorkshire and Humber, and this service commenced in September 2008. We are now recruiting our second wave of trainees into the service, to start in September 2009.
As part of this cohort of trainees, we want to recruit people who are fluent in languages in common use within Sheffield other than English (i.e. Urdu; Slovak; Somali; Arabic, British Sign Language), and have ring fenced some of our training posts for this purpose. These posts will play a key role in improving access to psychological therapies for people who do not speak English as a first language.
Sheffield Health and Social Care NHS Foundation Trust is the lead contractor for this service, which is provided in collaboration with Sheffield PCT, and the Voluntary Sector Consortium. The Trust will be leading on the workforce development element of IAPT in conjunction with the University of Sheffield. This involves the development of a new workforce of low- and high-intensity therapists.
This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a major national initiative, which will fundamentally change the way in which psychological treatments are provided in the NHS in England. You will be part of a new multi-professional workforce that will significantly increase access to treatment for people with depression, anxiety and other common mental health conditions.
Trainees would undertake academic training, provided and accredited by Sheffield University and local training and supervision within existing mental health services in the locality. The on-job training would include learning about, and providing under supervision, CBT-based self-management for clients suffering from mild to moderate anxiety and/or depression, using a stepped-care approach. All trainees will receive intensive supervision and support in their workplace as an integral element of their training. The traineeships will be based in Sheffield.
