Who really ended slavery?

Public meeting hosted by the Socialist Workers Party

This year marks 200 years since the abolition of slavery, and we will hear a lot about William Wilberforce and other liberal abolitionists who campaigned to end it.

But what will get far less coverage is the story of the people that really brought slavery to an end: the slaves themselves.

From the slave uprising that sowed terror in the hearts of slaveowners, to the victorious slave revolution in Haiti that fought off the armies of the worlds superpowers, it was the slaves that made the slave economy entnable, and brought it crashing down.

Our rulers would like us to learn a version of history that says progress is won through polite lobbying of parliament. But the reality is that all our freedoms have been won through struggle.

Come and hear Weyman Bennett discuss this inspiring hidden history, and its relevance for the fight against racism today.

Speaker: Weyman Bennett, organiser for ‘Love Music Hate Racism’.
