SADACCA International Community Cultural Day

Sheffield and District African Caribbean Community Association (SADACCA), with the support from community partners, is hosting a free event on 27th August, offering people in Sheffield the opportunity to experience and celebrate the diversity of cultures in Sheffield.

Acts and attractions will include art and craft displays, traditional music, cultural food tasting, story- telling, drama and children workshops & activities. Various ethnic groups in the city will be represented.

In attendance will be The Right Worshipful the Lord Mayor of Sheffield (Councillor Arthur Dunworth), Sir Bob Kerslake (Chief executive Sheffield City Council) and Pat Midgeley (Councillor)

This annual event will be the second held by the group, the first of which was held on 17th April 2006. This event is free and individuals from all communities are welcome.

Time: 11am to 8pm

International migration and globalisation has resulted in a rise in cultural diversity and number of new communities throughout the world. The city of Sheffield (The fourth largest city in the UK) is no exception. Without recognition and appreciation, this cultural diversity gained through the mixture of rich heritage and practices as seen today may disappear.

This event hosted by SADACCA with the support of its partners from local community organisations and agencies, seeks to promote

• Cultural diversity

• Positive interaction between communities.

• Community harmony.

• Assist in the integration of new arrivals to the cities.

“This event is all about the interaction of the diverse communities within Sheffield”, said Ricky Bennett, co-ordinator at SADACCA. “A shared understanding of our different cultures and traditions, which can be gained through positive events like this, leads to greater respect and understanding between communities and will help to make Sheffield a harmonious city.”

The community groups and agencies who worked in partnership to plan and deliver this event include: Jamaican community, Zimbabwean community, Ezikolesinthu Arts & Culture Consultancy (Botswana), Liberian community, South African community, Guyanese Community, Mauritian community, Eritrean, Nigerian community, English community, SADACCA and Refugee Support.

3. The International Community Cultural Day aims to:

   • provide an opportunity for Sheffield communities to appreciate the norms and values of other cultures

   • encourage and attract as many different cultures/nationalities to display and exhibit aspects of their culture on the day of the event

   • demonstrate the contribution of culture and tradition to the daily lives of people

   • Assist in the preservation of cultural values for future generations of different community groups.
