Our flag is a celebration of our freedom

Regarding the letter condemning the prevalence of the flag of St George during the European football championship, I see no harm in supporting our football team. Indeed, I have a St George and Union Flag permanently on my car.

Not only because I support our football team, but because I feel privileged to live in a country where I can worship my God without fear of persecution; where I can belong to a political party and express my political views without fear of arrest; where I have never felt the pangs of starvation; where my health is cared for and where I have been taught to read and write.

These are just a few of the privileges I enjoy and, clearly, many other people from all over the world recognise them because they wish to come and live here. Our flag is not a sign of petty triumphalism. It is a celebration of our freedom, shared by millions.

Yours faithfully, Janet Stracey
