Summer in the cemetery

Well dressing
Well dressing

Story:Saleema Imam

Well dressing time came round again in July this year with ‘bee-keeping’ as its main theme.

For those who don’t know, a well dressing is a large collage of flowers to decorate a well or spring. It is a special local tradition that is very ancient. Community volunteers put together the design between Wednesday and Saturday and the Lord Mayor our local councillor Talib Hussain – launched the completed floral mosaic on Sunday 8th July.

On Sunday 23rd August Ken Wild led a walk looking at some of the interesting World War One graves in the cemetery; while it was only expected to take an hour, walkers were so engrossed that it took over twice that time. Inside the old mortuary chapel an exhibition of beautiful, nostalgic, World War One postcards was also on display.
