The Carwood Suite is one of Burngreave Library’s best kept secrets. This bright, airy room is the library’s community space, perfect for a variety of activities.

Since Burngreave Library became fully run by volunteers, we have hosted a number of our own events, including Shakespeare Showtime where almost thirty children performed scenes from Macbeth, a professional theatre production ‘The Yellow Doctress’ and our regular Junior Chess club.

Our young volunteers wrote about their Shakespearean experience: “Sam and Erica organised a production of Macbeth. We started by warming up our muscles. We focused on one word and we projected our voice to emphasize the word. As we spoke we added different tones to explain how we felt. It taught me that you could explain more meaning into one word by the tone of your voice.” Nathaniel Dyas (12)

“I loved my experience at Burngreave library because we got to perform Macbeth. We built up a lot of confidence from this course because everyone was encouraged to act in front of an audience. Our teacher Sam thought it could never get better. We all got a certificate and a voucher. I felt very proud of myself because I had just performed a Shakespeare play.” Waqeel Miller (10)

“This session helped develop our drama skills and our team work. We read a part of the script of Macbeth and this helped our academic skills. As well as doing fun activities, I enjoyed the play where we changed our tone of voice and our facial expressions to engage the audience.” Khaliq Miller (12)

The space has been hired for a range of meetings and courses, accommodating up to forty people, and was a key venue for ‘Journey to Justice’ events.

Soon we have a four week Safeguarding Awareness course from 14th June at 9.30-12pm and summer activities including a Hype Dance workshop.
