Congratulations to the self organising young men who have banded together to form the MAALI football team. The launch was at Verdon St Recreation Centre on 6th April 2016.

When I arrived, the place was busy with lots of children, young adults, local residents, various local dignitaries and the overflowing personality of Safiya Saeed. Safiya runs the Reach Up project for girls and young women, aged 11- 20. This success meant that she was then approached by some local Somali lads who wanted her help to set up a football team. Safiya contacted United Sports Initiative for support who have provided funding for a football kit. She was delighted that the young men had a clear idea of what they wanted, and that they were working together to find positive ways to spend their time.

Safiya told guests at the launch how the new team needs active support from the community, not just through funding but encouragement and opportunities. Members of the team are from Burngreave, Firth Park and Darnall – and are from a variety of backgrounds and different cultures. Alan Billings, the recently re-elected Police & Crime Commissioner was the first guest to speak at the event – he wished the team every success and pledged some funding. Mark and Asif, from United Sports Initiative applauded the team members for being role models for other lads – they promised further funding and tickets for matches.

Safiya thanked all the speakers and representatives for their support and a presentation of flowers and gifts followed. Team members were then called up to receive their new team shirts. The Reach Up group had organised refreshments – elaborate and very tasty! Safiya and all the team members are very grateful for people’s kindness and support and would appreciate any offers of help from the community.
