The true meaning of Jihad

Story & photo:Mariam Khalid

The Muslim Youth League sisters in Sheffield organised a peace seminar that took place at the Burngreave Vestry Hall in December and was entitled ‘Jihadi Bride – To be or not to be’.

The seminar was open to all local women and it looked into the true meaning of Jihad in Islam. It clarified many misconceptions and negative connotations associated to the concept of Jihad, due to the term being misused and abused by radical extremists.

During the presentations and discussion based sessions, young women had the opportunity to discuss issues such as tackling radicalisation in the local community.

This is one of many projects being implemented through the Peace Education Programme which was launched by Dr Muhammad Tahir ul Qadri in order to tackle extremist ideology on the grassroots level through academic and community initiatives.
