The long awaited sculptures have finally arrived outside the Vestry Hall and Caborn’s Corner. The giant knots by artist Michael Johnson have caused quite a stir.
The sculptures are made from stainless steel and were funded through planning agreements with Tesco and Arches Housing.
Councillor Jackie Drayton spoke highly of the artworks, saying:
“The knots are there to remind us never to forget the past with the threads leading us on to our ambition for the future – building a vibrant and welcoming community, and Spital Hill continues to be an exciting place to live, work, visit, shop and eat.”
Customers at nearby shop Aden Corner, however, had mixed opinions. One expressed his gratitude for all the hard work the Council has put into Spital Hill and Ellesmere Green, but another greatly disliked them, saying simply, “They’re too big.”
Others who have spoken to the Messenger have expressed concern that money is being spent on public art at a time of so many service cuts.
