Road safety is a much-spoken about topic at the moment. Did you know Burngreave is one of the ‘hotspots’ for road accidents in Sheffield? At Byron Wood School, we have been doing lots of things to raise awareness of road safety issues.
We found out that a child living in the north-east of Sheffield is five times more likely to be involved in a pedestrian road traffic collision than those living in the south-west. Firth Park and Burngreave each had between 136 and 184 collision casualties aged under 16 since 2005.
This is the main reason the School Council decided to highlight the importance of driving safely, especially around schools.
We invited a road safety official to come into school to speak to each class about road safety and being safe. We then had an assembly about car accidents and how to cross roads correctly.
One of the main issues recently has been parents parking on the yellow zigzags outside school. People shouldn’t park there because it means there are too many people outside school at once. It is difficult to see all the children when they are crossing.
Our School Council group stood outside school every day for a whole week and tried to stop the parents parking where they shouldn’t. We waved posters at them and gave them a thumbs-up if they did the right thing. We made sure we came outside twice a day so the drivers wouldn’t forget. We also made leaflets to give out to parents raising awareness of the issue.
Please remember to drive safely and don’t park on the yellow zigzags. Safety of children comes first!
