As a holiday change from our usual monthly St Catherine’s venue, Burngreave local history group visited Burngreave library on 12th August and received a very warm welcome from Marcia the librarian.
Our intention was to check over a treasure trove of black and white photos of 20th century Pitsmoor. We are planning an exhibition of some of the recent research completed by group members, which might include some of these very pictures.
We also enjoyed a very interesting presentation by Rav Sanghera from Radio Sheffield, about the BBC and British Library's ‘Listening Project’.
Started in 2012, the project travels throughout the UK with a small listening booth recording everyday conversations which are stored for posterity. Over 1000 conversations are already in the collection, some of which have featured on Radio 4 and BBC radio Sheffield.
Some members of the local history group hope to take advantage of the listening booth’s imminent visit to
Firth Park from Friday 26th-Sunday 28th August (10am-4pm) --- Look out for us! Maybe these conversations will appear in the planned exhibition too.
If anyone else is interested in taking part in the Listening Project (either in Firth Park, radio Sheffield or elsewhere),
please contact Rav on (0114) 267 5440.
