Story by Shuna Beckett
Scores of women and children were welcomed at Verdon Street Recreation Centre to celebrate International Women’s Day.
It is a part of a global celebration of the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women which was first observed over one hundred years ago.
Guests got a taste of what is available in our community by visiting over twenty stalls run by local groups, including Sage Greenfingers, Pakistani Advice Centre, Ellesmere Youth Project, and the organisers, Burngreave TARA’s Feeling Good project.
The possibilities included a henna tattoo or a foot massage, making soap, watching Somali women’s dancing and trying on hats at the Burngreave Messenger’s photo booth!
One guest said,
“I had never been to an International Women’s Day event and had rather low expectations really. However, all the women attending, the colour, the music, the high number of organisations displaying their services – they definitely exceeded my anticipations. Women, regardless of their age or ethnicity, seemed genuinely cheerful – and so was I!”
