Darnell Sterling a local 17 year old is currently 2X Yorkshire Amateur Boxing Association champion at 64kg. He also recently reached the semi-finals of the national championships beating members of the England boxing team on the way.
In his final year studying for a sports qualification at Hillsborough College, he also works part time at Meadowhall in addition to training at least three times a week at a gym beneath Manor Social club at the top of City Road.
Asked if there was time in his day for anything else, Darnell replied that he also runs every other day, including running home from Manor to Carwood after a 2 hour training session and also goes to ‘the gym’ with friends for a bit of extra strength and conditioning.
His love of sport began in primary school when he tried a variety of activities including football, Lau Gar Kung Fu, Thai boxing, Kick boxing and eventually settling on boxing at a local gym on Earsham Street, Spital Hill owned by father and son, Phillip and John Wood. He later moved to Hillsborough Amateur Boxing Club based at the 363 club on Langsett Road with Roger and Michelle Sampson, Andrew Harris and Paul Smith.
Darnell emphasises
“I want to thank all my coaches that have guided me in and out of the gym from > start to present , I appreciate everything they do for me and everyone else that I box with.”.
A couple of years ago they moved the current location and changed the name to Manor Boxing Academy.
Darnell also says he gets fantastic support from his mum Tracey who finds the money for his equipment – thin soled boots at £80 a go which soon get worn down in training, similarly priced gloves and head protection, and shorts at £120+ a time depending on style and branding. Not the cheapest of sports!
Turning 18 during March, Darnell will now take part in Senior competitions, facing opponents of any age and experience. His obvious abilities and self-confidence promise a bright future when he follows his major aim to turn professional and to travel.
