Black History Month aims are to promote and share the knowledge of the contributions of black people and their achievements, heighten the confidence and awareness among the community.

Black History Month has been celebrated in the USA since 1926, initiated by Dr. Carter G Woodson. Celebrated in February, it was thought that such a Month was necessary in order to neutralise the ignorance and deliberate distortion of our history. This would also enable us to celebrate and acknowledge the achievements of African /Caribbean people in the Diasporas in keeping alive our heritage.

In Britain, Black History Month was first celebrated in October in1987 as part of the African Jubilee Year. Since then it has become an annual event each October, to recognise celebration and embrace the achievements of our communities.
