20mph speed limits could be introduced in Shirecliffe by March to help prevent deaths on residential roads.
The plans affect the streets from Standish, along Longley Avenue West to Penrith Rd and around the Norwood and Bishopsholme estate. The speed limit on Shirecliffe Road itself will not be affected.
The plan is to reduce the standard maximum speed limit from 30mph to 20mph. There are many fewer car accidents at lower speeds and they are a lot less dangerous at slow speeds when they do happen.
The Council plan is to roll out the improved zones over time. Shirecliffe has been chosen for this phase because of the number of accidents in the area.
There will be new speed signs and road markings. The aim is that the speed limit will work for most people as they get used to it, the same way the 30mph speed limit does.
