Burngreave Library was busy with children during the summer holidays. Many were encouraged to keep reading by the Library Service’s Summer Reading Challenge. The Burngreave Messenger and Pitsmoor Adventure Playground also provided activities based on this year’s reading theme, the Mythical Maze.
During the 6 week break, children created monsters and magical creatures and learned about mythologies. Over 20 primary and secondary school age children completed the challenge of reading at least 6 books during the holiday. They were presented with certificates and medals by library worker Janet Ring, at a special celebration event on 30th August.
Library users thank staff
The library celebration was also a chance to thank library workers Janet Ring, Mary Reid and Sue Taylor. After decades of service in Burngreave, Janet, Mary and Sue will be working in different libraries from October, because of cuts in the library service at Burngreave.
Library users presented flowers and a decorated cake and spoke about the huge contribution the staff had made to the local community. Parent and library user Marcia said,
“I just wanted to thank you for the difference you have made to our community, and to me and my son personally. You have had a huge impact on the lives of children who started reading here and have gone on to University and successful lives.”
Another library user Dorothy said,
“This library makes such a difference to local people's lives, adults as well as children. Many vulnerable adults need the library service and library staff more than ever.”
Mary thanked everyone on behalf of staff, and said,
“This is a fantastic library, and you have all been the best borrowers.”
