The International Meal is held on the first Thursday of the month at the Welcome Centre, Christchurch, Pitsmoor. This year it has had a little extra support from Seedbed funding.
A wide variety of dishes have been produced from African sadza (maize meal) and meat dishes, to African and Iraqi fish dishes, salads, desserts, and soup; there was even one using a special technique for curing meat!
The dishes have been really appreciated by the refugees and asylum seekers who attend the meal, as they are often more familiar tasting. Having this new range of dishes has also been a conversation point during the meals, with everyone sharing stories about cooking techniques in their own country.
Everyone has worked hard, often spending a full afternoon cooking prior to the evening event. Despite the commitment and effort involved, participants have all said that they enjoyed the experience.
The funding has also provided a great opportunity for collaboration and social interaction.
Usually the ‘chef’ has been assisted by friends and other asylum seekers, all of whom can then take some credit for the delicious food produced. People are always impressed by the lovely atmosphere in the kitchen.
