Story: May Norwood
Some of you may have seen the Messenger article about 15 Fir Vale students going to build an orphanage in Ghana. If you didn't, then now you know!
I was one of those students. I spent 10 days in Ghana, and I have to say, it was one of the best experiences of my life. It was hard. We had to battle heat, mosquitos, and I got very, very ill.
Despite this, it was incredibly rewarding. I felt fulfilled in myself. We did something meaningful, and that gives you the sort of buzz that nothing else can quite match.
Having done something so amazing, I didn't want to just forget about it. I wanted to follow it up with something. I realised I could raise more money for the children in the orphanage! I decided to do a sponsored head shave. My friends and family were very supportive of the idea, and helped me set up a sponsorship page and get started. We also found we could donate the hair to charity as well. We chose to donate it to the Little Princess Trust, which is a charity that make wigs for children who've had chemotherapy.
Now I am here, enjoying the freedom of short hair, watching it grow, millimetre by millimetre, happy in the knowledge that I have raised an extra £220 for the wonderful children I met in Ghana.
