There will be lots of chances to feel good at Verdon Recreation Centre, after Burngreave Tenants and Residents Association secured a further 2 years funding for the health project, Feeling Good on Verdon Street.
With funding from the People’s Health Trust, the project will again be holding a weekly drop in for women on a Wednesday, with the chance to meet new people and try new activities including exercise and crafts. Project worker Aislinn Adams said:
“We will be asking people what activities they would like to do and building the programme around what they want. We will also be able to offer training for volunteers who want to help out each week and develop their skills, which will be useful for getting employment and being more active in the community.”
Fellow worker Shena Moore said,
“This is a social and supportive group. Women who need help with their English can come along and I will support them.”
At the first session in September women enjoyed some energetic Zumba, badminton and knitting. New member of the group Gemma said,
“I've got four boys, one with special needs, and this is the only time I get for myself. Everyone is really friendly and welcoming. Zumba really helps me destress, and it means I can get fit without the cost of joining a gym.”
Volunteer Diane said:
“It's loads of fun. This is a really friendly group. I'd encourage people to just come along and have fun.”
The Feeling Good on Verdon Street project includes: Badminton Wednesdays 9.30am-10.30am £1, Drop-in for women with conversation, crafts and exercise Wednesdays 10am-12noon, Volunteering opportunities, Cook and Eat sessions once a month at the Furnival Thursdays, 11.30am – 1.30pm, 23rd October, 27th November, 18th December.
