Activity Sheffield invite you to discover Burngreave from its parks and green spaces to the re-vamped high street shops and cafes in this series of one off walks.
We will be visiting local beauty spots, points of interest, areas of historical significance as well as just walking for the fun of it. You could also take part in Activity Sheffield's Loyalty Card Scheme designed to help the local economy while earning money off at the same time.
Kelham Island & River Island Walk
Friday 28th February – 1:00pm – 3:30pm
This walk starts outside Vestry Hall (S3 9DD) and heads for Kelham Island, with its museum and its very own microbrewery. The walks then pass one of Sheffield's iconic steel works before re-joining the Upper Don Walk to return to Spital Hill via Exchange Brewery.
The Old Buildings of Burngreave Part I
Wednesday 5th March – 10:30am – 12:30pm
Burngreave has got a lot going for it both historically and architecturally, the walk starts outside the re-vamped Abbeyfield Park House (S4 7AT)in Abbeyfield Park.
Come along and have a wander round with Ron Clayton and learn about some of Burngreave's older relics, from its Tudor Chip shops, Mid Victorian Villas and Boarding Schools.
A Walk with a View
Friday 28th March – 1:00pm – 3:30pm
This circular walk starts outside Vestry Hall (S3 9DD) visiting Burngreave Cemetery, Abbeyfield Park, Denholme Green Space and Pye Bank for one of the best viewpoints in the city.
The Old Buildings of Burngreave Part II
Wednesday 9th April – 10:30am – 12:30pm
Concluding our tour of Burngreave's many great historical buildings, the walk starts outside the re-vamped Abbeyfield Park House (S4 7AT). Come along and have a wander round with Ron Clayton and find out about Burngreave's historic old buildings including Vestry Offices, Churches and Toll Bar Cottages.
The Views from Wincobank Hill
Thursday 24th April – 1:00pm –4:00pm
This linear walk is from Firth Park to Burngreave, climbing to the summit of Wincobank Hill for the fantastic views of the entire city, so bring along a camera. It is a varied route which includes a number of different parks and Burngreave Cemetery. If you are joining us from Spital Hill, take the number 75 or 76 bus and get off at Firth Park (S5 6QQ).
Life and Death in Burngreave
Tuesday 6th May – 2:30pm – 4:30pm
Murder Most Foul- from death in the dark and satanic mills to Zeppelin raids and Gang Wars. Ron Clayton takes you back in time to pre Doctor Finlay days of rickets, diptheria and TB, as well as the chilly days of outside privies in Burngreave Cemetery. The walk starts outside Abbeyfield Park House (S4 7AT).
Urban Greens
Monday 12th May – 6:30pm – 8:30pm
Come along and Explore Sheffield’s largest green space. As part of Walk Month, join Friends of Parkwood Springs and Walk Boost who will be leading a walk of Parkwood Springs, the ancient Roe Woods and Crabtree Ponds Nature Reserve. Meet outside Pitsmoor Post Office S3 9AU. Bus services 29, 47, 48, 75, 76, 83, 87, 88, 265.
Parks and Woods of Pitsmoor
Friday 30th May – 1:00pm – 3:00pm
This walk starts outside Vestry Hall (S3 9DD) and sets off for Ellesmere Park, this is the first of 4 local parks we will be visiting, as well as a local nature reserve and ancient woodland. Come along and see all the great green space Burngreave has got to offer.
