On 15th December we celebrated the life of Gladys Winterton at St James’ Church, Scott Road, where she had been a member for many years.
She had lived in Burngreave all that time, being a pupil of Firshill School and working later as a seamstress for a local Co-op. At the outbreak of war she was directed by the Ministry of Labour to work either in a munitions factory or at Firvale Infirmary, (now part of Northern General Hospital). She worked on wards caring for mentally disabled people. She spent the rest of her working life there, retiring in 1961.
Throughout her life she has looked after relatives, visited and cared for friends and served others. When she broke her hip a couple of years ago, she went to live at Westbourne House Residential Home. Nevertheless she still knitted jumpers for children abroad, making around 400 over the years. She was a good local citizen whose service has done a great deal for the people of Burngreave where she spent a century.
