Local boy Radford Love has won the British Taekwondo title in the Cadet -57kg category at the national championships in Manchester.

At Verdon Recreation Centre, Radford’s instructor Craig Wallace, a former National champion himself, said:

“It was a difficult final bout for Radford. After the usual three rounds, Radford and his opponent – last year’s silver medal holder – tied, so it was in an exciting tie-break 4th round that Radford finally came out the winner.”

Radford, who trains 3 times a week, said he was very excited at winning and “intends to go for gold again next year,” to add to his many medals. It will be at the higher weight in the Junior level, however, and he will face new competition and bigger opponents. Further into the future there are possibilities of being selected for the national team and getting to the Olympics. “My dad is very proud and it’s all good publicity for the club,” he said.

Radford has trained for six years at Verdon Street, which has classes on Tuesday and Friday evenings and also goes to a session at Hillsborough.
