Health professionals are supporting Burngreave TARA to bring women together to improve their well-being, and support others in their neighbourhood to do the same. Activities will be based at Verdon Recreation Centre and the Furnival on Verdon Street.
Weekly drop in
Women can come along to a drop in every Wednesday to find information they might need. This will sometimes include visits from different health professionals who can give advice on health issues. At the same time there will be a chance to join in different activities such as sewing or exercise sessions.
Shena Moore who will be running the drop in said,
“Women can tell us what information or activities they would like, and that will help to decide what we do at future sessions.”<
Cook and Eat
Once a month at the Furnival women will have the chance to learn how to cook more healthily. Health Trainer and Development Worker, Somshun Nessa, will be sharing her expertise on healthy eating, and encouraging women to share their knowledge and recipes.
Somshun said,
“This is a great opportunity for everyone to come together, socialise and meet your local neighbours from the Burngreave area”<
Volunteers
The project will also be looking for “Feeling Good” volunteers, to help support the activities on Verdon Street and to encourage others to think about health and well being.
Shima Nasir, Community Development worker in Mental Health, will be working alongside the TARA’s Aislinn Adams to support volunteers.
Aislinn said,
“It will be a chance for people to gain experience of working in their community. There will also be training so that people can develop new skills.”<
Burngreave TARA are pleased to have the support of the Healthy Communities Programme and the SHSC Development Team in running the project. The project is funded by the People’s Health Trust.
