New local history classes

The new Cemetery local history group, with Suzanne Bingham – tutor/local historian – will meet at the following dates/times in the Burngreave Vestry Hall computer suite.

All are welcome to join the sessions!

All sessions take place on Fridays from 10.00am to 12.00 noon

February 1st; March 1st; April 12th; May 3rd; June 7th; July 5th

The workshop sessions will give local participants the skills to access and use resources held by the city archives and local history library.

The archives hold a vast collection of original documents on all aspects of the city's history. Visiting the archives with a tutor will inform participants about what is available and the skills to use the resources to find specific information.

One purpose of the workshop sessions is to research the history of the coal mines which existed beneath the area of the land now occupied by Burngreave Cemetery prior to its creation in 1861.

Visits to the city archives, local history library and the National Coal Mining Museum will be discussed and arranged with group members.

Venue; Burngreave Vestry Hall, Burngreave Road, S3.
